Brian Beach (BSBA '90, MBA '95)
Brian Beach

UF's new senior vice president for administration and business ventures is a familiar face: Brian Beach.

"As a first-generation college graduate, I am so thankful to have had the chance to earn two degrees from UF and for the incredible opportunities that have come from being a Gator," he says. "Coming back to UF was easy, as I owe it a tremendous debt of gratitude."

Beach brings 15 years of experience in venture capital, investment banking and consulting to his new job as the chief administrative officer for the university. His most recent job at the university was special assistant to the president, where he acted as a liaison between the president and the Board of Trustees.

"Hopefully, my experience in the business world allows me to offer additional perspectives or ideas that add value and contribute to the institution," he says.

Three vice presidents are among the administrators who report to Beach, who is responsible for the overall leadership, management and organization of central administrative units.

"I really do enjoy working with the talented and dedicated trustees, administrators, faculty and staff who are so committed to making UF the exceptional place that it is," he says.

Beach is an active member of the Bull Gator Club and lives in Gainesville with his wife, Kimberly. They have three boys.

Susan Ivey (BSBA '80)
Susan Ivey

Susan Ivey has shattered the glass ceiling in her field. That's because Ivey has worked her way up to chairwoman, president and CEO of Reynolds American Inc. She became president, CEO and a director in January 2004 and chairwoman in January 2006.

Reynolds American is the parent company of R.J. Reynolds, the nation's second-largest tobacco company; Conwood Co., the nation's second largest manufacturer of smokeless tobacco products; and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co.

While the recession has caused the company to cut jobs, R.J. Reynolds' stock has risen 33 percent since Ivey took over. She served as chairwoman of R.J. Reynolds from July 2004 to April 2008.

Ivey has been in the tobacco business for 25 years, starting as a sales representative for Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. in 1981. Now, she can be found on Forbes' 100 World's Most Powerful Women 2009 list and Fortune 500's 50 Most Powerful Women in Business 2009 list, ranked 59 and 26, respectively. But she says that's not the best part of her job.

"Certainly it is affirming to be on lists and to be recognized as one of only a few female CEOs, but honestly, the greatest reward I get from my position is the opportunity it affords me to develop talent in others," she says. "Watching someone in the organization take on a brand new challenge, and watching them not only meet expectations but really go beyond them to a new level of achievement ... that's my idea of a perfect day at the office."

Ivey has not forgotten her Gator roots. She created an endowment in the Warrington College of Business Administration to support a professorship in international business, serves on the UF Foundation women's initiative steering council and is a member of the UF Foundation's Board of Directors. She also serves on the Women's Leadership Initiative for the United Way.

Ivey lives in Winston Salem, N.C.

Ben (BSESS '95, MESS '97) and Kimberly Rowell (BHS '96, EDS '97)
Ben and Kimberly Rowell

Ben and Kimberly Rowell launched Backspace Records and have dedicated their careers to this Atlanta-based independent record label.

The goal of the label is to develop artists musically while giving them the chance to succeed financially.

Ben has always had a passion for music, starting out playing in the popular Gainesville band Big Sky. After years of mid-time success, the band began to hit bad times, mainly due to their poor management. It was then that Rowell decided he could go a different way in his musical career.

Kimberly, a former high school guidance counselor, now runs the business side of the label.

The label represents many diverse artists, one of which is fellow Gator Mark Gaignard (BSTEL '96) and his band, Mark Gaignard and the Also Ran. Gaignard was an easy choice to sign to the label as he was the former lead singer of Big Sky.

The label is also dedicated to giving back to the community. Mack Lindsey, the Rowell's business partner, recently received a heart transplant. Now, a portion of their profits will go toward organ donor organizations.
