UF was one of 2,000 universities and colleges that celebrated the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin envisioned the day as a peaceful protest to create environmental awareness. More than 20 million people participated and brought the green cause into the political spotlight for the first time.

Today, Earth Day is celebrated around the world in thousands of events. To learn more, visit http://solutionsforyourlife.ufl.edu/hot_topics/environment/earth_day.html.
