At age 43, Michael Rao* (PhD '89) is leading his fourth institution of higher education. From his time as a student assistant at UF to his current role as president of Virginia Commonwealth University and the VCU Health System, Rao has been a fervent believer in changing lives through research. He talks about harnessing that passion, getting "fuel" from students and asking supporters for help.

You would hardly call it a drought. For 14 months, UF's athletic programs enjoyed their usual success on the fields and courts around campus. But after the amazing run of national titles in the highest profile sports from April 2006 through January 2009 — well, for UF to go more than a year without winning it all in something was surprising.
