Great Gator
At age 43, Michael Rao* (PhD '89) is leading his fourth institution of higher education.
From his time as a student assistant at UF to his current role as president of Virginia
Commonwealth University and the VCU Health System, Rao has been a fervent believer in
changing lives through research. He talks about harnessing that passion, getting "fuel"
from students and asking supporters for help.

You would hardly call it a drought. For 14 months, UF's athletic programs enjoyed their usual
success on the fields and courts around campus. But after the amazing run of national titles in
